Lingolift reporting provides data for each part of the Watch, Learn, Speak instructional sequence, and this article will explain each part in detail. To learn about the different reports available on Lingolift, see this article.
Report Summary
The top of each report will show summary data, and this is what each data point tracks:
- Average Watch Completion: The percentage of assigned video lessons that students completed.
- Average Learn Completion: Students’ spelling accuracy when they are asked to fill in the blanks with vocabulary words from the video.
- Average Speak Score: Students’ pronunciation accuracy and fluency of the lines they spoke from the video.
On each detailed report, you can see a summary of the Watch, Learn, and Speak data. Click on the boxes to see more detailed information, which is explained below.
Watch
This data point simply tracks if the student watched the video in its entirety. It will either be 0 (not watched) or 1 (watched).
This helps teachers track whether students have completed the assignment by watching each video in its entirety, which is a key first step in learning the relevant language. Learning language in the context of natural speech is helpful, and repetitions increase familiarity and solidify understanding. When students can easily replay videos, look up words, and hear them pronounced as needed, they have agency in their own learning.
Learn
During Learn, students see clips from the video along with the English captions and are asked to type in the word missing from the sentence. This report shows students’ spelling accuracy of the words.
Filling in the blanks in a sentence that students hear spoken aloud can help them understand the relationship between oral and written language. Spelling out key vocabulary allows students to practice both reading and writing the words, which increases their familiarity. Placing the words in context builds understanding of their meaning and appropriate syntax. By reviewing students’ responses, teachers can track students’ understanding of how phonemes are represented in printed English.
Speak
During Speak, students see clips from the video along with English captions and are asked to speak the lines. This report provides detailed data on students’ pronunciation accuracy and fluency of the lines they spoke.
It provides an accuracy score for each line, along with the option to listen to the recording and download the file. All lines from the video are displayed, but reporting is only available for the lines students spoke.
At the bottom of each report, there is a key to help you interpret the data:
- Each word is given a rating of either Clear, Satisfactory, or Poor.
- There are also indicators for when there is a long pause or additional words are spoken.
- The vocabulary words students are learning are underlined for reference.
This report reflects how well a student’s pronunciation matches that of the speaker in a video. Teachers can listen to the audio recording of the student’s pronunciation, and they can see and hear where there is room for improvement. Informed by this data, teachers can focus students on areas of need, provide additional feedback, and make recommendations about what to practice. The ability to do this asynchronously is helpful for busy teachers with a lot of demands on their limited time with students. Having the opportunity to repeat the exercise privately, with feedback after each attempt, helps students take charge of their capacity to speak fluently with accurate pronunciation.
