The Text Complexity Measures provide an indicator of the language complexity of an audio story transcript. These measures assess text difficulty through a detailed analysis focusing on four main areas: decoding ease, vocabulary familiarity, sentence complexity, and repetition patterns. This approach helps identify how challenging a text may be for readers, considering various factors that contribute to reading difficulty.
Recommended Text Complexity Measures by grade level
Text complexity measure recommendations for each grade level are based on research data. The table below shows a range of text complexity measures recommended for each grade level.
This measure offers a starting point for selecting stories to use with students. As always, the suitability of stories for individual students may vary, based on a variety of factors, including students’ age, interests, background knowledge, and English language proficiency, as well as the degree of scaffolding provided.
